Our visitors will find a magnificent selection of plants in our nursery. Amongst familiar plants such as ornamental cherries, rhododendrons, hydrangeas, phlox, peonies or parsley you will discover unusual, little-known plants with high garden value, as well as new introductions. Even though we always stock a basic range, the offer changes in the course of the year with seasonally attractive plants.
The highlight: each year we choose our personal "Plant of the Year" – one particular variety that is not yet for sale on the German market. Allow yourself to be surprised each year with the new highlight.
During the fall and winter months our gardeners travel throughout Germany visiting good nurseries. This allows them to discover the best quality trees and shrubs that we can offer in the next season, also in somewhat larger sizes for impatient gardeners. Our fruit tree range contains not only old cultivars but also the newer disease-resistant varieties.
When entering the Garden Academy, visitors are welcomed by a large display of roses. We offer an assortment of English roses, bought from David Austin directly, which have proved very hardy in Berlin over the years. A choice of historic and wild roses complete the range; and of course there are hybrids of German origin too.
We also have a wide range of herbaceous perennials, offering about 1000 different species and cultivars each season. We source some of the lesser-known ones from specialist suppliers in The Netherlands and Belgium. We get our basic range from several German perennial growers (for example from the Foerster Staudengärtnerei), but also from smaller, specialised nurseries that supply us, for example, with attractive larkspurs.
We sort our flowers into "shadow lovers" and "sun worshipers" and then grouped according to colour in order to allow you to find your favourites faster.
Herbs and Vegetables
All year round we offer herbs – from parsley to unusual basils and flavoursome mint varieties as well as exotic lesser-known plants, that will complete your exotic cuisine. In spring and early summer, you will find a large selection of old tomato varieties, peppers and other young vegetable plants in the herb greenhouse. We offer varieties for the garden, as well as those more suited to container growing on a balcony.
For Balconies and Terraces
From the beginning of January, the first forebears of spring, such as violets and primroses, and also potted spring bulbs are available for those who are eager to bring the first signs of the new season into the house. As the season evolves, so does the range of plants on offer. Traditional auriculas, gold lace primulas, and special ranunculi bridge the transition to summer flowers.
In the greenhouse dedicated to seasonal bedding, the plants are sorted by colour; it looks appealing and encourages people to try out new colour compositions and discover new plants they may not have seen before. For the summer, we also offer a large range of unusual home-grown annuals and special dahlias that are perfect gap-fillers for flower beds and borders.
At the beginning of September, we dedicate one of our larger greenhouses to spring bulbs. Over 250 000 bulbs arrive at the end of August, and they are sorted by type and colour. Over 80 different tulips, 30 daffodils, about 20 alliums, and dozens of the smaller charmers for garden or balcony, sun or shade, late winter or early summer. We bag them ourselves by hand, so we can be assured of the quality of the individual bulbs.
We have a large selection of high-quality vegetable, herb and flower seeds. The vegetable and herb seeds are partly supplied by a local, biodynamic, demeter-certified grower.
Our Team of Gardeners
We have a dedicated team of highly qualified gardeners who will help you with the planting and maintenance of your garden. As a regular maintenance team, or for a one-off special project, they are at your disposal to plant, lift, and divide, and can help you improve or rework existing flowerbeds. They can help with specialist pruning work, such as rejuvenation of shrubs, pruning of roses or fruit trees, and shaping of topiary forms.
In order to maintain a beautiful garden or terrace with strong, healthy plants, our highly skilled gardening team can advise you on appropriate fertilizers, soil improvers, and composts and can help you choose suitable pots. The necessary equipment such as tools, watering cans and gloves will make gardening tasks easier.
As embellishments to your garden, you will find climbing frames or rose arbours, greenhouses, and garden pavilions. For your personal comfort and enjoyment, you can choose from our wide range of furniture and parasols, complemented with fitting accessories such as cushions and tablecloths. An assortment of vases, jugs and colourful glasses as well as a wide range of gardening and cookery books round it all off. All this and much more can be found in the onsite GLASHAUS or MANUFACTUM.
During the ADVENT SEASON, the entire Garden Academy is transformed by a particularly festive Christmas atmosphere. Each year, we devise a new theme, which is reflected in the decoration and in the range of gifts on offer. Advent wreaths and accessories, German-grown Christmas trees, decorative and gift items make the it a highly popular place for Christmas shopping.
Das Café in der Gartenakademie is tucked away in a quiet corner in this unique setting. Summer or winter, this establishment enjoys great popularity. During the cold winter months, life retreats entirely inside the greenhouses. In the bright, airy spaces, surrounded by lots of plants and flowers, families and friends meet for a cosy breakfast, or enjoy one of our seasonal lunches. However, the huge selection of cakes remains the firm favourite of all our guests.
During spring and late autumn, people sit outside the greenhouses wrapped in blankets catching the precious sunrays, whereas during the heat of the summer sun they all retreat onto the lawns and look for a cool, shady spot under the 100-year-old Weymouth pine.
The CAFÉ in the garden academy can be rented for special occasions and celebrations. Please do not hesitate to contact us.
